Registering to vote
If you’d like a postal or proxy vote, you’ll need to contact SCDC.
You can only vote in elections (or a referendum) if your name appears on the register of electors.
South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) carries out a full review of the register every year, but you can also add your name to the register at any time.
Remember, if you do not register then you cannot vote in elections or a referendum in South Cambridgeshire.

How to register
To register in time for an election, you must register at least 12 working days before the poll – whatever the election.

Postal and proxy votes
If you are going to be away on any polling day for an election or referendum and therefore unable to get to a polling station to vote in person…
- You are at work, travelling or on holiday…
- You have moved house since the electoral register was drawn up and have not yet joined the register at your new address…
- You are physically unable to get to the polling station…
- You just don’t have the time…
… you can still exercise your democratic right to vote.
You can vote by post or appoint someone else – a proxy – to vote on your behalf.

- Postal vote. The deadline to apply to vote by post is by 5.00 pm 11 working days before an election.
Anyone can apply for a postal vote, and you can choose to have it on a permanent basis or for a specific election / referendum. If you want to have your ballot paper sent to you in the post, you will need to apply to vote by post.
- Proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is by 5.00 pm five working days before an election. Anyone may apply to vote by proxy as a one-off, for a specific election / referendum. If you would like to apply for a permanent proxy vote, you should contact the Elections team to discuss your requirements.
Simply print out the form, complete the details and send it to the Electoral Registration Officer at SCDC’s offices:
