For the 2024 general election, our parliamentary area of South Cambridgeshire was fought on new boundaries.

MPs are elected for a five year term – but the ‘life’ of a parliament is at the whim of the prime minister. The last election was on 4th July 2024 – the next may not be until 2029.

The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority

Nik Johnson is the mayor. He was elected on 8th May 2021.

The mayor is not a ceremonial position, but rather that of a chief executive. The incumbent’s job is to work on the strategic issues crossing individual council borders within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – notably our housing, travel and infrastructure needs as part of the devolution process which puts local decisions in the hands of local people rather than central government.

Although being mayor is not a political role, Nik was elected on the Labour ticket on 6th May 2021, replacing James Palmer (Conservative) who was the County’s first mayor (2017-2021).

Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire

Darryl Preston is the police and crime commissioner. He was re-elected on 2nd May 2024 (for a four year term), having been first elected in May 2021 (for a three year term).

The PCC is responsible for an efficient and effective police service in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by setting police and crime objectives, the police budget and issuing crime and disorder reduction grants through his police and crime plan. He also holds the chief constable to account, making him answerable to the public.

The office replaced the Cambridgeshire Police Authority.

While the role of PCC is non-political, Darryl was elected on the Conservative ticket in 2021 and re-elected in 2024. He succeeded the late Sir Graham Bright (Conservative), the first incumbent in the post (2012-2016) and Jason Ablewhite (Conservative) (2016-2019); Ray Bisby was acting PCC (2019-2021).

Elections for parish councillors are held every four years. The last election was on 3rd May 2018 – there would have been one on 5th May 2022, but as there were only four candidates, they were automatically elected; Paul Kraus was co-opted onto the council at its meeting on 18th October 2022 and, following the resignation of Alan Pinney, Samantha Abbasi was co-opted onto the council at its meeting on 18th July 2023; Peter Hayward was co-opted onto the council on 24th July to replace Carole Cooper who resigned in January 2024.
